Alocasia scabriuscula is a small, slow aroid from the limestone forests of Sarawak, in Malaysian Borneo, where it grows low in the humid understory rather than climbing or spreading wide like some of its cousins. The species name comes from the Latin for "somewhat rough," a nod to the slightly bumpy, matte texture of the leaf surface and petioles, which sets it apart from the glossier Alocasia most people picture. It grows from a corm, so a plant can go dormant and come back season after season rather than behaving like a typical rhizomatous aroid.

This albo/pink line is a sectoral variegation, not a fine speckle. On this plant, large irregular patches of cream white cut across each arrow-shaped leaf, sharply divided from the green rather than blended into it, and if you look closely at the veins running through the white sections you can already catch a faint blush of pink. That's the tell for this variegation type: new growth comes in nearly white, almost albino, and the pink only shows up later as the leaf matures, developing more or less depending on the light it's sitting in.

We've had the original plant for a few years now, and every one we sell is a division off that same corm, not a separate import or a different clone circulating under the same name. We grow ours in a chunky bark and perlite mix with high humidity and bright, indirect light, which is what seems to bring the pink out most reliably without scorching the white sectors while they're still young.
