The Monstera deliciosa ‘White Monster’ is an elite, highly unstable aroid sport cultivated and popularized by the legendary Japanese horticulturist Kunzo Nishihata. It is highly revered for its ghostly, fine-marbled, or sectoral white variegation. Unlike standard Albo or Thai Constellation varieties, its new leaves frequently emerge almost entirely bone-white. They slowly develop intricate green veining and minty patches as they mature. The lineage of this plant trace back over 70 years to a post-WWII Japanese grower named Mr. Itoh, who discovered the mutation after cutting back a dried-out, dying Chinese specimen. Kunzo Nishihata later preserved the strain and introduced it to global collectors. Kunzo himself notes that the cultivar is inherently "capricious" and unpredictable. If a plant appears to lose its pattern and revert to solid green, Kunzo explicitly instructs that giving the plant a shock by cutting the base or trunk almost always forces the ghost-like white variegation to return on new growth.
