Monstera ‘Burle Marx Flame’ is a rare climbing cultivar known for its slender, elongated leaves that develop pronounced fenestrations and splits as they mature. The foliage is solid deep green, with each leaf emerging uniquely shaped and gradually opening to create a dramatic, architectural appearance. Its climbing habit allows successive leaves to grow larger, enhancing the plant’s vertical presence and sculptural form.
The cultivar is widely associated with the Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, as the earliest known specimens were reportedly found in his garden, though its exact botanical origin and parentage remain unclear. It is thought to be a naturally occurring form or hybrid within the Monstera group, related to Monstera deliciosa or other tropical species from Central and South American rainforests. Despite some uncertainty in its formal taxonomy, it has become sought-after for its dramatic fenestrated foliage and elegant climbing habit. It thrives in bright, indirect light, prefers evenly moist, well-draining, and aerated soil, and benefits from warm, stable temperatures with moderate to high humidity. Supporting the plant with a moss pole or trellis allows the leaves to climb naturally and display their characteristic splits and perforations.
