The species was discovered in French Guiana in 1991 by Moen Joep, and its unusual leaf shape was initially thought to be the result of insect damage rather than a natural form. Variegation appears as irregular patches and marbling in white, cream, or pale yellow against deep green foliage, with each leaf developing a completely unique pattern. Both the standard Philodendron × joepii and its variegated form are rare in cultivation, making the variegated version a true collector grail.
