Silica is not a fertilizer in the usual sense, it is a supplement built around potassium silicate that we add to a feeding schedule to reinforce what a plant is already growing rather than to feed growth directly. Silicon uptake strengthens cell walls, which shows up as sturdier stems and more resilient foliage, useful on anything prone to flopping or splitting as it puts on size, and genuinely useful for cuttings during propagation when a strong root system determines whether the cutting takes at all.
We add it into the nutrient mix rather than using it alone, diluting it into water first, letting it sit briefly, and combining it with the regular feed before adjusting pH, since silica shifts pH upward and needs to be accounted for rather than treated as an afterthought. It works across every setup we run, soil, semi-hydro, and hydroponic reservoirs alike, and we have used it on everything from small aroid cuttings finding their first roots to more mature specimens that benefit from the added structural support as they grow larger leaves.
It is not something we push on every plant in the collection. We reach for it specifically when a plant is propagating, putting on rapid new growth, or showing weak stem structure, and treat it as one part of a broader routine rather than a standalone fix.
Guide
Hydroponics/Semi Hydro: 1 tsp per quart of water. Soil/Potting Mix: 1/2 tsp per quart of water
Tip
Add GT Silica to plain water, stir vigorously and rest for 15 minutes. Add nutrient (GT Foliage Focus or other nutrients) to this solution, stir vigorously and rest for 15 minutes. Test pH and adjust to 6.
